Thunder are one game from the Finals, and the Spurs first have to win back the air
The hardest part of Game 6 is not always the scoreboard.
Oklahoma City beat San Antonio 127-114 in Game 5 and moved one win from the NBA Finals. The Spurs still have home court, Victor Wembanyama, and the strange sense that one quarter can turn the whole room. What they need to recover first is the air the Thunder have been taking away possession by possession.
Oklahoma City's way of winning is exhausting to play against.
It is not only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander carrying the match. He remains the steady needle, scoring above 26 a night in this series and making the next pass when the lane closes. But when he starts slowly, the Thunder do not panic. A wing hits a shot, a big body leans into the paint, a reserve guard speeds the game back up. You think one door is shut, and the ball has already gone through another.
Wembanyama's numbers still carry weight.
He is around 28 points and nearly 12 rebounds a game in the series, and every Thunder finish near the rim seems to include a second thought because he is there. But by this stage, the playoffs ask more than one player's talent. In Game 5, Oklahoma City kept making him run between rim protection, switches, post catches, and weak-side help. The shadow was still enormous. The floor under it was getting thinner.
That is San Antonio's first problem in Game 6.
They cannot only wait for Wembanyama to block a shot into the crowd. They cannot count on one three-point run to wipe out the pressure. The ball has to reach his preferred spots earlier. The weak side has to cut before the double team arrives. The handler cannot begin thinking only after the Thunder show two bodies.
The Thunder will keep breaking the match into small pieces.
They will let Shai choose the defender. They will use Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein to place weight in the lane. They will trust Alex Caruso to steal one ordinary-looking possession that suddenly feels expensive. Oklahoma City does not mind an ugly game. Ugly means every detail can still be squeezed.
The Spurs' chance is hiding in the same place.
If Game 6 becomes a pure star duel, they have hope. If it becomes a long system exam, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Stephon Castle, and the rest must arrive sooner, not stand beside Wembanyama waiting for space. A playoff home crowd does not rescue hesitation. It only makes it louder.
The Thunder can already see the light behind the Finals door.
San Antonio has to put a shoulder back against it. Game 6 will have its highlights, but it may be decided by a pass delivered half a second early, a box-out that does not get avoided, or the defender who finally refuses to retreat when Shai stops at the midrange.
