Paris and Arsenal go to Budapest, where attack and patience must show themselves
Budapest will not lack names.
Paris are the defending champions. Arsenal are back in the Champions League final for the first time since 2006. On May 30 at the Puskas Arena, two temperaments meet: one side carrying almost uncontrollable attacking volume, the other carrying a defensive order that has been built patiently over years. In a final, neither can hide the best card for later.
Paris offer the more direct temptation.
They have scored 44 goals in this Champions League season, close to the old single-season mark set by Barcelona. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gives the left side the shape of a curved blade. If Ousmane Dembele is free of his calf trouble, the right side has another layer of speed. With Achraf Hakimi back in training, the full-back lane becomes a question again. Luis Enrique's team do not only run. They keep running until the defensive line shows little cracks.
Arsenal's answer is just as clear.
They are one match from an unbeaten European campaign. Their route has not been built on sitting deep alone. Mikel Arteta's side defend by controlling the next space: David Raya calms the first pass, William Saliba and Gabriel keep the front of the box firm, and Declan Rice moves like a nail that can be hammered into different parts of midfield. Arsenal conceded only four goals in the league phase, a kind of cleanliness that almost looks sharp.
The final is not a simple clash of attack against defence.
Can Paris resist turning every advance into the final pass? Can Arsenal still push the shape forward when they feel comfortable defending? Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard will meet pressure when Paris recover on the left. Kvaratskhelia will feel the attention on Arsenal's right side. Finals are rarely about whose strength looks prettier. They ask whose strength still works after the opponent has studied it.
The two teams already sit inside each other's memory.
Paris knocked Arsenal out in last season's semi-finals and went on to lift their first Champions League trophy. Arsenal return now with another kind of belief after winning the Premier League. A club that has just learned how to survive a long league race begins to believe it can also survive a final that tightens the chest.
Paris want to stay on the throne.
Arsenal want to put north London on the European Cup for the first time. Both wishes are large, so the match may begin carefully. The first twenty minutes could be all testing, all wing duels, all midfield traps. The opening may come from a three-second loss of control after one bad touch in the middle.
A final is not the summary of a season. It is the trial of it.
Paris' goals and Arsenal's clean defending will be counted again from zero in Budapest. That is the cruel beauty of the game: a whole year of order can be changed by one run behind the line, one goalkeeper's hand, or one full-back arriving half a step late.
