Messi goes to a sixth World Cup, and Scaloni leaves some of tomorrow at home

Argentina's list begins, inevitably, with Lionel Messi.

A sixth World Cup no longer reads like a line on a resume. It feels like a shadow stretching from Germany in 2006 to another summer in North America. The young Messi of that first tournament still had impatience in his eyes. South Africa pushed him into Diego Maradona's embrace. Brazil and Russia hardened him. Qatar finally gave him a night when the weight could fall from his shoulders.

Now Lionel Scaloni has put his name on another 26-man squad.

The sharper part of this list is not only who is there. It is who has been left outside. Franco Mastantuono, Alejandro Garnacho, Matias Soule and Claudio Echeverri all belong to the language of tomorrow: speed, clips, imagination, the promise of a national team turning the page. Scaloni chose differently. A defending champion does not first ask which player is most exciting. It asks who will still know his position when the 75th minute turns messy.

That is why Nicolas Otamendi, Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso still matter. Emiliano Martinez anchors the goal. Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez bring the contact. Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Exequiel Palacios give the midfield legs and pass selection. Up front are Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Thiago Almada and Nico Paz. Youth is present, but it is placed beside the old frame, not allowed to tear it down.

That feels very Scaloni.

Argentina did not win in Qatar because of a neat idea on a whiteboard. It won because it could change faces within the same match. It could press or retreat. It could let Messi slow the game until a window opened, then release Alvarez to chase a goalkeeper. It could let De Paul orbit Messi like protection, then let Enzo turn the game with one diagonal pass. The team was not perfect. It knew one another's habits.

This 2026 side will be older, which also makes every effort more expensive. Messi will not spend a tournament making endless young legs' runs. His game will depend even more on teammates putting the ball into the right corridor. Otamendi's experience still has value, but the grass behind a high line will look longer than it did four years ago. De Paul's running still matters, but the touches around him must be cleaner.

The final cuts define the tone. Scaloni is not opening the future all at once. He is protecting the rhythm of a team that already knows the pressure of a World Cup final. Mastantuono's absence will be argued about because a missing prodigy is always louder than a veteran's inclusion. Yet tournament nights are often decided by quieter things: a full-back's recovery run, a midfielder's early foul, a striker's first movement in the box.

Argentina is taking a team that knows how to win a World Cup. It now has to prove that the trophy did not leave it trapped in 2022.
